Veterans

Veterans of the past, fighters of war long ago,

Most of them now a memory, forgotten heroes who fought the foe.

They were the colonist who fought for independence,

Making America a fortress, a spot to achieve a residence,

Veterans of the Civil War who fought for their ideals,

Ugly memories of states versus states, bleeding feels.

World War one Veterans who know what a Kaiser implies,

A tyrant deciding your fate and so many who fought, only to die.

World War Two fighting tyranny over the seas,

Fighting the hornet of dictators and emperor, stung by the bees.

And now still fighting, a savior of the world.

When you are down and out, hungry and cold,

America comes, and our flag is unfurled.
