Animals and their parts

Duck Down: Is not daffy falling.

Is there a difference between down and feathers and does it really matter? Absolutely. The feathers on geese or ducks are the outer covering of the bird. They have quills, repel water, and make it possible for the animal to fly. Down lies beneath this protective covering – usually on the belly of a bird – and is light and fluffy.  It provides the insulation birds need to keep warm.  Rather than quills, a down cluster has a round center called a plumule. Soft and airy, it features thousands of tiny fibers that radiate from its core.

Porcupine shoots its quills: It is a farce.

Porcupines have soft hair, but on their back, sides, and tail it is usually mixed with sharp quills. These quills typically lie flat until a porcupine is threatened, then leap to attention as a persuasive deterrent. Porcupines cannot shoot them at predators as once thought, but the quills do detach easily when touched.  The porcupine quill were not used in writing.

A quill pen is a writing implement made from a moulted flight feather (preferably a primary wing-feather) of a large bird. Quills were used for writing with ink before the invention of the dip pen, the metal-nibbed pen, the fountain pen, and, eventually, the ballpoint pen. The hand-cut goose quill is rarely used as a calligraphy tool, because many papers are now derived from wood pulp and wear down the quill very quickly. However, it is still the tool of choice for a few professionals and provides an unmatched sharp stroke as well as greater flexibility than a steel pen.  Note this one is red for debits and spending more than you have.  It represents the United States government.Image result for picture of a quill pen

Twenty-three people have died in Japan after eating fugu since 2000, according to government figures. Most of the victims are anglers who rashly try to prepare their catch at home. A spokesman for the Health and Welfare Ministry struggles to think of a single fatality in a restaurant, though last year a woman was hospitalised after eating a trace of fugu liver in one of Tokyo’s top restaurants – not Miura-san’s.

Do not let the cow get mad at you:

The case involves a patient in Texas who died in May. Lab tests from an autopsy confirmed the patient had variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), a deadly disorder first reported in 1996 in the United Kingdom that has killed more than 220 people and prompted the slaughter of millions of cattle. Victims of the degenerative disease, which attacks the nervous system, suffer from depression and dementia before they die.
